Cobb), and you can good scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whoever sis (Nina Foch) has worked from the casino and dated an effective corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). New caustically epigrammatic program, the fresh new cast’s suavely managed body language away from love and you can hazard, and you can Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and fashionably assertive images (plus their political conscience) get this to pugnacious yet detailed spectacle a low profile classic of your category.” [ 10 ]

Cobb, while the an authorities inspector, in addition to in the score . Although the area comes after a familiar development, new characterizations are new and shows adequate so you can overbalance. Dialogue is actually terse and you can topical, preventing the emotional, phoney touch. Unusual camera bases come-along once in a while so you’re able to escalate focus and momentarily stop the eye. Good teamplay because of the Robert Rossen, increasing just like the movie director-scripter, and you can Milton Holmes, completely new creator and you can affiliate producer, in addition to helps with rendering it a flaccid development.” [ eleven ]

Its generally an issue of enjoying Mr. Powell proceed through his paces stylishly whenever you are a massive throw away from stars and you may actresses promote your typical service. Evelyn Keyes plays the great little woman who brings about the brand new finest in him and Ellen Drew is the smooth and you may slinky vixen just who gets him toward jams. Thomas Gomez was oily since the villain and Lee J. Cobb does a separate able trip just like the a weary police inspector which eventually shuts the fact. Significant amounts of taking and you may smoking is carried out by the alarmed.” [ a dozen ]
